A Total Body Workout You Can Do With a Friend

Everything’s better with a friend: a glass of wine, a road trip, and a cozy night in. One thing I really enjoy doing more if I have a pal there with me? Working out. Partner workouts are not only more fun with someone there to give you a good laugh when you feel like your muscles are about to fall off but they are also a great way to stay connected with those you love even when ‘me time’ becomes scarce. While I love meeting friends at the gym, there’s a lot you can do outdoors. Outdoor workouts will give you the benefits of a fantastic full-body workout and some fresh air. I’ve put together a total body workout that will get your muscles working and (hopefully) help reduce stress this holiday season. All you need to do is grab a buddy and head outside to get moving!

total body workout: push-ups

Push-Ups: 10 Reps

I love starting out any workout with push-ups—especially if I am training with someone I haven’t trained with before. Push-ups are a great test to assess people’s current physical abilities. After watching someone execute a pushup, I will know a lot about what I may need to modify to ensure my friend or client gets the best workout for them. There are endless modifications you can make to a pushup to make it easier or more difficult! Push-ups are also a total results producer because they recruit so many muscles from your shoulders, arms, core and even glutes all while increasing your heart rate.

total body workout: v-ups

V-Ups: 20 Reps

When working out with a partner, I love to focus on the core because 1.) a tighter midsection is something just about everyone wants to work on and 2.) there are so many core exercises you can do with a partner! V-ups are my favorite way to get started with core work since there are many modifications. Here we are using our hands to help stabilize us, but you can also lay hands just under your lower back to increase the intensity. Or, keep your whole torso on the ground to decrease the intensity by turning it into more of a leg raise than a full v-up.

total body workout: scissor kicks

Scissor Kicks: 40 Reps

Leg movements will recruit muscles from the lower abs. Here you can do scissor kicks with your torso flat on the ground or at a 45-degree angle. Having your torso raised will recruit more muscles and will be more difficult. With this one, always remember to keep your spine aligned—no lower-back arching here!

Go through each exercise for 4 rounds making modifications as needed. Push your friend and yourself to go as hard as you safely can!

Why You Should Kickstart Your Resolutions Before the New Year

In a world where we jump from one holiday to the next (sometimes even before the previous holiday is over), it can definitely be daunting to focus on your resolutions before the new year even starts. But, this is the one tradition I believe we should start early. How early? Start them whenever you’re ready—there’s no wrong time! In an effort to get ahead—and potentially use some of the magic numerologist’s place on the occurrence of 11/11—I started mine on November 11th this year. I’m not really sure if that has any validity, but I’ll try anything in the name of personal growth. I started by writing everything down in my phone on a goal-setting app. Hey, if I don’t put it in writing, it’s not happening. So far, I am happy to report there has been small but measurable progress. I’m hopeful and confident going into 2020 with a small amount of progress towards what I want to accomplish in the New Year. Plus, it’ll help ensure that I don’t give up and that I’ll reach them with less resistance than I would have had I waited. Read on for a few other benefits I have found from getting a headstart on your New Year’s resolutions.

new year: practice makes perfectPractice Makes Perfect

I personally love that getting a head start on making positive changes will give you a little grace period to put those goals into practice. One of my goals is to drink more water so I got myself a new water bottle (a huge one!) and have been adjusting to the practice of bringing it everywhere with me. I’m not quite where I want to be with intake, but have increased it with the new bottle! It’s all about giving yourself grace when it comes to implementing new habits.

Take the Pressure Off

Starting early will take some of the pressure off of you in the New Year! None of us need added pressure, am I right? Getting a head start will help you reach your goals and allow you extra time to experiment with the ways that work best for you to implement new habits.

new year: room for growth

Room for Growth

Many of us start with more than one resolution—which is a great thing—but starting earlier might mean you have time to conquer even more! If you realize you’re effectively acting on your resolutions, add a few more in that you had on your goals list. Adding them in small batches will feel much less overwhelming than trying to accomplish them all at once. Remember, habits take time to kick in. Don’t get frustrated if you’re not seeing immediate results!

There’s No Time Like the Present

Remember how I talked about reaching goals with less resistance? Just about every time we try to make a change, the ego, the ID, the fact that many bad habits are simply habitual will make us resist that change. Starting early gives you time to push through the resistance period and have a plan ready for overcoming any struggles that may arise.

No matter when you start, reaching any goal takes intention, hard work, and a plan. Remember to make SMART goals: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. Write them down somewhere you can revisit whenever you need to and consider sharing them with someone you trust so you can have some help with accountability. Happy New Year!

The 5 Must-Have Pieces of Winter Clothing According to Our Stylists

If there’s one thing we love about winter, it’s all of the cozy textures and oversized layers we get to wear all season. With so many great options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to narrow down which pieces deserve a spot in your closet. Our stylists are showcasing the 5 must-have pieces of winter clothing that are fashion-forward and can stand up to the cold.

winter clothing: reversible vest

1. Reversible Vest

For those in-between days or layering up indoors, a plush vest is a perfect option for keeping you warm. This one is especially coveted because of its reversible capabilities (who doesn’t love a good twofer?). Lined with ivory sherpa on one side and olive microsuede on the other, you can easily choose how you want to style your outfit.

winter clothing: sherpa jacket

2. Sherpa Jacket

Sherpa is one of the biggest trends of winter so it’s no wonder that this cozy jacket is made it in the top five. The premium and undeniably cozy sherpa fabric ensure warmth on those days where the temperatures start to dip. Plus, the slightly boxy fit makes it easy to layer over everything from chunky sweaters to laid-back athleisure.

winter clothing: instasculpt jeans

2. Skinny Jeans

These mindfully made skinny jeans from DL1961 are figure-flattering and will complement any outfit you pair them with. They’re made with a bit of stretch so they’ll feel as comfortable as your favorite leggings that you had to talk yourself out of when you left the house (been there). Pair them with oversized silhouettes for a well-balanced look.

winter clothing: crew neck sweater

4. Cozy Crew Neck Sweater

Not only is this crew neck incredibly stylish, but it’s also crafted from a cotton blend with a splash of wool that’s perfect for all of your cold-weather outfits. We also love that the dramatic balloon sleeves and chevron pattern give it a bit of a vintage vibe. And, with its warm rose hue, it’ll instantly refresh your winter wardrobe. What’s not to love?

winter clothing: basic base layer

5. Basic Base Layer

Meet your new favorite long sleeve tee. Made from a cozy ribbed fabric, it’s great for layering under all of your winter clothing. Ready for the best part? With each purchase, Project Social T donates a percentage to a variety of different charities nationwide. You’ll feel all sorts of warm and fuzzy both on the inside and the outside every time you wear it.

4 Easy Ways to Make the Most of the Holiday Season

Whether you like it or not, the holiday season is upon us! I personally love the holidays and truly believe it is the most wonderful time of the year. (Anndddd that’s why my holiday decorations go up November 1st every year.) Call me crazy or call me festive—I’m a proud fanatic of the holidays. Regardless of whether you’re a holiday fanatic or not, this time of year often comes with high expectations, which can lead to unnecessary stress. But if you approach it by setting your intentions and establishing how you want to make the most out of your holiday season, that will help you prioritize the little time you have. To give you some inspiration, I’m outlining 4 easy ways to make the most of the holiday season. Whether you implement some of my ideas or not, I hope you’ll encourage you to take a moment and think about what’s important to you.

holiday season: give back to the community

Give Back to the Community

Get in the holiday spirit by giving back to your community. There are a ton of ways to spread the spirit of giving no matter your budget or free time allowance. You could even ask your friends and family to volunteer with you or donate to a cause in lieu of gifts. Last year, I gifted a good friend a donation to Wikipedia instead of a physical gift because he is a Wikipedia fantastic. He LOVED the gift and appreciated the thoughtful donation to a cause he cared about over material goods. Here are some more ideas for giving back this holiday season:

  • Contribute to a clothing or toy drive or start your own
  • Visit a nursing home
  • Opt in to showing up monthly to your favorite charity or organization
  • Write letters to deployed military members
  • Make cookies for people working over the holidays

holiday season: conversation starters

Be Prepped With Conversation Starters

During the holidays, you’re sure to be around friends and family you haven’t seen in a while. It’s time to dust off the ice breakers! You’ll be spending a lot of time in long conversations, catching up with loved ones and even meeting plus ones and guests you’ve never met before. Once you’re past the normal small talk, be prepared with some great conversation starters to fill in any awkward silences. Here are some of my favorites:
  • What are some of your favorite holiday traditions that you did while growing up?
  • Where are the five places you really want to visit on your bucket list?
  • What’s the weirdest food you’ve eaten?
  • What’s your favorite thing about the area/city/state you live in?
  • If you had to stay one age forever, what age would it be?

holiday season: recipes

Try New Recipes & Share Old Favorites

Food is one of my favorite ways to bring people together over the holidays. Finding new holiday recipes to try out can be a fun way to cook up new ideas for your potlucks and parties. Pinterest anyone? At the same time, sharing some of your favorite recipes with friends and family and making meals or baking treats together is a wonderful excuse to get people together. Here are some of my favorite recipes that I’m sharing with you today:

holiday season: mind and body

Take Care of Your Mind & Body

With long to-do lists and high stress over the holidays, it’s extra important to fit some self-care into your routine. You spend a lot of time thinking about gifts for others while also scheduling your visits to fit in time with friends and family, leaving little time to breathe. Set aside dedicated time away from your holiday stressors to treat yo’self! How you spend this time is completely dependent on what is important to you, but here are some ideas:

  • Fit in a work out over your lunch hour instead of eating at your desk
  • Take a long bubble bath
  • Practice regular meditation (I highly recommend Headspace as a meditation app—it’s free to download)
  • Turn off your phone and email and enjoy a movie or book without disruption

Tips & Tricks to Help You Survive Your Outdoor Winter Workout

For those that typically enjoy an outdoor workout, the winter weather can certainly put a damper on your fitness routine. As tempting as it is to hibernate and skip it altogether, there are plenty of benefits that come from enduring the cold temps and snowy environment. You burn more calories, strengthen your heart, and get a healthy dose of vitamin D to keep you happy and energized. Doesn’t sound too bad, huh? We’ve got a few tips and tricks to help you survive your outdoor winter workout and hit the ground running—just watch out for ice!

outdoor workout: warm-up

Warm-Up + Hydrate

A warm-up is essential before any exercise but is especially vital for an outdoor winter workout. Your muscles and joints are more susceptible to sprains in freezing temperatures making it easier to get injured. Start with a 20-minute jog to get your body loosened up and ready to go. It’s also important to remember to drink fluids before, during, and after your workout. While you may not feel as thirsty as you would in warm weather, you’ll be working up a sweat and breathing in dry air making it easy to lose fluids. Carry a water bottle or sports drink with you to stay hydrated.

outdoor workout: dress in layers

Dress in Layers

In order to keep your body warm and dry, it’s important to dress in layers—and in the correct order. Start with a base layer that wicks away moisture. Then, layer on wool or fleece to keep you insulated and warm. To top it all off (literally), throw on a water-resistant layer to be prepared for the elements. Once your body starts to warm up during your workout, you can strip away layers as needed. It’s also important to make sure your ears, hands, and feet are protected. When it’s cold, most of your blood flow will be directed to your core, leaving these parts of your body vulnerable. Wear a hat or headband, wool gloves, and thermal socks to prevent frostbite.

outdoor workout: safety first

Safety First

It’s important to take care of your skin—yes, skin—during your outdoor workout. The dry air can easily dry out your skin (even with all of the water you’ll be drinking) so consider applying a heavy-duty winter moisturizer before you head out. Something else you might not have thought about? Sunburn. Yup, it can still happen even in the winter. Apply sunscreen and a UV-blocking lip balm prior to your workout. With the winter days being so short, it’s very possible you’ll be working out after dark. Stock up on reflective gear to make sure you’re safe even after the sun goes down. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you have proper footwear with enough traction. Nobody wants to be slipping and sliding!

Closet Cleanse: Why It’s So Hard To Get Rid of Expensive Items

A few months ago, I posted a photo of my closet on Instagram, and people were pretty shocked. For a person with a career in fashion, my wardrobe is pretty darn small.

I don’t have a ton of clothing because I keep a tight, well-edited closet, and I rarely have a tough time letting things go. Plus, another reason my closet looks so small is because I keep my bags and shoes in my home office.

That space is more like a piece of the decor than actual style “stuff,” and I rarely think about it when I do my closet cleanses. There is room for everything that’s there, and it serves as a lovely backdrop for my videos.

However, recently, I’ve had a little voice inside my head telling me to let some of that stuff go.

The voice whispered to me for months. Last week I decided to listen.

I could easily identify which pieces needed to go, but I found it shockingly difficult to release them. After a little pondering, I knew the reason …

I shouldn’t have bought those pieces in the first place!

I screwed up and didn’t want to face the music. So in today’s video, I am showing you all of the fabulous designer pieces I got rid of and why. Check it out.

7 On-Trend Winter Jackets That Are Warm & Stylish

According to the thermostat and brisk weather outside, it’s time to bundle up. Since a jacket is now an everyday essential, it’s important to have a few noteworthy options in your closet. Get ready for a practical and fashion-forward winter wardrobe with these seven trendy outerwear pieces.
winter jackets: animal print

1. Faux Fur Jacket

Warm and incredibly cozy, you’ll never want to take this faux fur jacket off. We particularly love the versatility that it brings to your wardrobe. Wear it to work, pair it with leggings, denim, heck—even sweats, sneakers and a tee. You name it and this jacket is the perfect match.

winter jackets: puffer jacket

2. Statement Puffer

A puffer jacket is arguably one of the biggest trends of the season. Don’t have one yet? Leave a note for your stylist and request this one immediately—we’ll wait. It perfectly combines an on-trend color with of-the-moment corduroy for an effortlessly cool end result.

winter jackets: moto jacket

3. Military Moto

While the utilitarian trend might feel like it’s been around for ages, it remains a style that you can never go wrong with. Buckles, snaps, and subtle distressing make this jacket a great option if you’re looking to add a bit of edge to your ensemble. Don’t be afraid to pair it with workwear for casual Friday at the office.

winter jackets: leopard jacket

4. Sporty Shearling

Jump on the cozy cover-up trend with a sporty shearling coat. Comfy, warm, and seriously soft, this leisurely leopard printed piece is ideal for your off-duty days. Whether you’re heading to the movies or meeting up for drinks, this showstopper is a fail-proof option.

winter jackets: buffalo plaid jacket

5. Buffalo Plaid Topper

~Check~ this jacket out (sorry, couldn’t resist). While it features a classic black and red buffalo check plaid, it’s flattering moto-inspired silhouette and ultra-soft texture instantly make it trendy. You can play up the retro vibes by pairing it with a straight-leg jean and knit sweater.

winter jackets: hooded puffer jacket

6. Classic Puffer

A classic puffer jacket isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. An easy way to refresh this traditional piece is to try it out in a new hue. As hard as it may be to stray from black (guilty), a light and airy or bold and bright option will energize both you and your wardrobe.

winter jackets: star moto jacket

7. Celestial Cover-Up

This modern moto jacket is a must-have piece. Trust—it’s written in the stars. With its playful celestial print, you’ll find yourself reaching for this over your standard moto any day. Layer it over a chunky knit or casual hoodie to ensure you stay nice and toasty on even the coldest of days.

11 Basics Every Woman Should Own

I’m been pushing my Ultimate Wardrobe Checklist for years now.

Why? Because adding basics to my wardrobe changed the game for me.

Back in the day, when I was a fashion-obsessed youngin’ who thought she needed a new outfit for every occasion of her life … My closet was filled with statement pieces. If I loved it, I bought, and I typically only got to wear that item once and in one way.

This behavior resulted in wasted money (and seemingly insurmountable debt) and a personal style that was all over the place.

Then one day I hit me.

Maybe I should start investing in those “boring” basics the magazines are always talking about.

I took a pause from buying “fun” clothes and purchased things like a white button down blouse and a classic leather jacket.

WOW!

Instantly my look was more polished and I was able to create more looks with what I already had.

Total game changer!!!

You’re not alone because that shit happens ALL THE TIME.

I was in Nordstrom this past weekend with a friend, and the selection was trash. Her immediate reaction was to give up on building a new wardrobe. This is where most people go wrong – one bad shopping experience, and it’s all over.

It started with “this selection sucks,” and quickly escalated to “everything is too expensive.” It was all downhill from there when she decided maybe it’s best to wear jeans and a plain tee every day for the rest of her life.

Yeah, it got that dark.

There is a solution, my friend – there always is. Shop where the selection is always unique.

Shop vintage.

You might be thinking, “Ewwww used clothes” or “I don’t want to look like some throwback time machine girl.”

I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to. In today’s video, I am giving you four tips for making vintage look modern. You’re welcome.

How to Make Hygge a Part of Your Lifestyle

Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is defined as a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality. It engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being and is regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture. When one of the happiest countries in the world makes something a huge part of their culture, we all want to follow suit. What is it about hygge that brings so much joy? Well, it embodies a sense of togetherness—think cozy family meals and nights in spent cuddling and singing. That means no Netflix!

Everyone’s needs are different, and lifestyle experts are uncovering another covetable Danish concept we might all soon be jumping on to: pyt (pronounced pid). Pyt is all about cultivating healthy thoughts to better deal with the stress of everyday life. If hygge keeps your heart and house warm and cozy, pyt is more about maintaining mental health and making your thoughts warm and cozy.

In honor of the holidays being thrust upon us (did 2019 go by extra fast or is that just me?), I am sharing a few easy ways to cuddle up, get cozy, and make the most of the rest of this decade with a little help from our Nordic friend’s tried and true principles.

hygge: get outside

Get Outside

The Scandavaians believe there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothes. Spend some time outdoors every day to connect with nature (and your family) away from screens.

Host a Simple Meal

The holidays are all about getting together and it doesn’t need to be fancy. Skip the usual holiday dress code and opt for a casual, simple meal focusing on the company and everyone’s comfort.

hygge: practice gratitude

Practice Gratitude

Many of us get pretty religious about practicing gratitude this time of year, but the key is remembering to practice it all year. Moms, get the kids in the habit of practicing gratitude by writing down what they are grateful for.

hygge: read

Read

Not just a juicy magazine in the salon for your pre-holiday party blowout, but really cuddle up with a soft pair of sweats and your best blanket to read something substantial. Alone or with your kids, this will help you settle your mind and body during this busy time of year.
